Dental

NEW IN 2023! Dental coverage will be provided by Delta Dental. There are two plan options with slight differences. A High PPO plan is more expensive due to covering orthodontia and having a lower deductible. The offered Low PPO plan does not cover orthodontia and has a higher deductible, but costs less from a monthly contribution perspective. To search for in-network dentists, use the button below!

Life and Disability Insurance

Medstar provides you with Basic & Voluntary Life/AD&D coverage as well as Short-Term Disability through UNUM.

Basic Life/AD&D

Employees working 30 or more hours per week are eligible for a 1x basic annual earnings to a $200,000 maximum life benefit payable to your designated beneficiary in the event of your death. An additional accidental death & dismemberment benefit (AD&D) is payable to you in the event of a covered dismemberment or to your beneficiary if your death is the result of an accident.

Voluntary Life/AD&D

A sudden accident or death can leave you or your loved ones in a vulnerable position. Employees have the opportunity to enroll in Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance which will supplement lost income in the event of an accident or death. If you choose to enroll in employee coverage, this will be in addition to your employer provided Basic Life coverage.

Who's Your Beneficiary? Naming a beneficiary is a crucial part of electing life insurance. Also, don't forget to update your primary or secondary beneficiary if you experience a life event, such as a divorce or birth of a child.

Short Term Disability

Everyday illnesses or injuries can interfere with your ability to work. Even a few weeks away from work can make it difficult to manage household costs. Short Term Disability coverage provides financial protection for you by paying a portion of your income, so you can focus on getting better and worry less about keeping up with your bills. Your coverage through UNUM pays 60% of your weekly income to a maximum of $1,000 per week.

Please consult your Employee Benefits Guide and plan certificate for additional details.

Additional Voluntary Benefits

Accident, Hospital Indemnity, Legal Services, and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) are also available to Medstar employees.

The contributions for all services can be reviewed in Bswift. The 2023 medical FSA contribution limit will be $3,050 per year, which is a $200 increase from 2022. Employers can allow employees to carry over $610 from their medical FSA for taxable years beginning in 2023, which is a $40 increase from 2022. An FSA is a type of savings account that provides the account holder tax advantages. FSA accounts allow you to reduce your taxable income by setting aside pre-tax dollars from each paycheck to pay for eligible out-of-pocket health care and dependent care expenses* for yourself, your spouse and your dependent children.

In order to participate in the FSA, you must enroll each year. Your annual contribution stays in effect during the entire year (January 1st through December 31st). The only time you can change your election is during the enrollment period or if you experience a change-in-status event. Also, you must elect this benefit within 30 days of your hire date or first date of benefits eligibility.

Dependent Care FSA:

The Dependent Care FSA allows you to pay for eligible dependent care expenses with tax-free dollars so that you and your spouse can work or attend school FT.

Unlike the Health Care FSA, funds in a Dependent Care FSA are only available once they have been deposited into your account and you cannot use the funds ahead of time.

FSA eligible expenses can be reviewed in the link below on the FSA store.
